Drama!

So I didn't think it was going to happen, but it's been three weeks and already there's some very unwanted drama. Keith and Nikki (roommate) cannot get along and therefore cannot be in the same room, because as we didn't realize before, she is extremely loud mouthed and annoying and will not shut up for one second--clearly no bitterness or anger there. Sorry, had to vent. I'm being optimistic that I'll find some kind of compromise, but right now, it's very frustrating :(

In terms of books, I am finally reading Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. They're filming the movie right across from my office, so it inspired me to start it. I'm not very far, but once you get past the first half of the first chapter, it does start to get interesting. It just took me about five tries to actually get that far. I'll try to keep you posted on how that's going. At the rate I'm going, it's going to take a while.

Holy crap! Wants to read everything! (I know I'm still kinda stuck on this being a reading blog). So I'm halfway, or a little more, through with Lirael and then has the third one but in the meantime am reading a BUTTLOAD of plays and human rights nonsense for everything else! Wheeeee!!!

Reading Sucks...

Ok so I haven't had the chance to read Lirael in a while (if anyone else besides Anne reads this soon, I'm reading Lirael and have decided to use this blog to just post random things about random things I'm reading!) and it's quite sad. At home I go through a book at least every 3 days but since I've been back here it's much harder. Now I a forced to read Human Rights: A Very Short History, the concept of which is hilarious but becomes significantly less entertaining in practice! Tomas Paine, thanks, but I only care what you think in the bigger scheme of things. I have absolutely no idea what your exact words were and how eloquent they apparently were at that time...
This book makes me nap...and I haven't even started Antigone yet. But apparently I'm supposed to read this first so I can look at the Text of Antigone through the honed lens of "human rights." Great fun...obviously.

BEER!!!!

Okie so I'm at the part where the king is like "Oh, by the way, your mom might die...but not really... soooo you're gonna have to be the abhorsen even though you're a sissy...sorry." Hehe

And Lirael just found all the stuff in the chamber that was made for her thousands of years ago and is oh so very close to explaining all the confusion to me. You know, the second time in the library is not nearly as annoying as the first time. In fact, there was no boredom to be found! Aaaaand I still like the puppy hehe.

American Psycho

Yes the book does end very abruptly, the point being he doesn't change, doesn't get caught and just continues living his horrible, useless life. And as gross as the movie was, it was incredibly tame compared to the rest of the book. There was some idea of making it worse by leaving more to imagination or something- don't completely remember what the interview I read said. Buuuut I hated the book and thought the movie was ok so I'm probably not the one to talk to about it.

Oh, and there should be lots of summer hanging out!

Chicken Barn

That place sounds amazing! If there's a Maine trip that doesn't involve camping but involves hanging out and going to that book store and movie theater that's really cheap, I'm in!

In terms of books, I finished catching up on the vampire hunter series I've been reading, but I've been watching a lot of TV. Jane got a bunch of BBC shows on Amazon UK. I also watched American Psycho. I was very disappointed. I know I didn't finish the book, but I was expecting more. I can't remember who's seen it and who hasn't, so I'm not going to say anything that could ruin it, but I thought they could have taken the ending further. Did the book end just as abruptly?

Kailey, i want to go to there.  It sounds AWESOME.  I've been reading The World According to Garp (John Irving), but it is slow going, my heart hasn't been in it, although I'm liking it.  I've been watching lots of movies, though.  

Oh, I finished Shutter Island on the flight home, it was godawful.  

I've been thinking about our camping trip, mostly because I'm really interested in falling off the grid almost completely.  Not that I will, it's just... interesting I guess.  

Book Heaven for Chickens!

I found a magical place where there are hundreds of thousands of books to buy for any amount from $1.00 to $20.00. Or you can even sit on any of the super comfy chairs, couches and cushions spread throughout the rows and read for hours while drinking FREE COFFEE!!! Ok, in all seriousness, this place is amazing! It’s in a little town in the middle of nowhere (which is kind of a given since it’s Maine I suppose) called Ellsworth. As you’re driving down the barren, snow-covered road, all of a sudden there’s this massive chicken barn, seemingly abandoned if not for the giant red sign on the side that says “USED BOOKS!” The first floor is mostly composed of general antiques but one sectioned off area is full of glass cases containing books from the early 1800’s on Maine history. But then upstairs, there’s epic wonderfulness!!! From the top of the stairs you can look in either direction and cannot see the wall at the end of either hallway! Along the ceiling there are huge, arrow shaped signs directing you to the different genres, which include anything from Sci-Fi, Children’s, Drama, Mathematics, Aviation, Romance, Agriculture, and just about anything else you can possibly think of. Then, randomly off to the side, is this cozy little room with several couches and chairs, stacks of books along the walls and on tables, a roaring fireplace, and freshly brewed, FREE coffee. I bought 9 books for $18.00 and they are in GREAT condition! Most of them look like they might have been read once or not at all. Oh, and did I mention they’re all hardcover? Yes several of them were $4.50… for oversized, practically new, hardcover books, complete with dust cover intact. It is just amazing; I’m still kind of in shock… I’m going to go read now :)

Blog again!

I'm thinking we should try to do some book talk over break. And because it's going to bug the hell out of me, we need to change the title of the blog to just "Reading Blog" or something instead of "SUMMER Reading Blog"... cuz it's not summer. Arielle, you made the blog so you're the only one who can change settings like that.

I will facebook all this to you cuz I know none of you have checked this in FOREVER! (psst, neither have I)

New Book

I think we should read a play! They're shorter and I'm starting to get CRAZY busy. The only problem being plays can be really hard to find... What do some of you have easy access to? I'm assuming everyone has Shakespeare stuff but I don't know how interested people are in translating ancient runes (ok so we couls always read Harry Potter hehe).

I'll post on AP when I get more than 5 minutes to be on the computer...and it's not 7am.

20th!

Tis the 20th! Is everyone finished?! I'm...not.  But I am so close and will be by tonight.  To tide you eager readers over, here are some things I've done in the last week:

1) Spent more time working and not enough time reading!

2) Become immune to intense rape and torture scenes!

So, the book! What'd you think? Things certainly do start a-moving in the last two hundred-some pages.  I'll reserve judgment until I've finished the back fifty, but I think we should start getting your comprehensive thoughts (and ideas for the next book choice?  Given what I just subjected you guys to, perhaps someone else should pick the next book).

Ok, so I don't have time for a long post but I wanted to address a few key points:

A: Grace, your post is funnier than the book.

B: I don't think the book is sexist and I agree that Ellis is satirizing the upper class business "yuppie," but there was something way back in the early chapters that made me think that Ellis isn't particularly fond on women... can't remember what at this point so i guess it doesn't really matter.

C: hmmm there was a C I swear...

D: Tom Cruise? I'm bad at the whole pop culture thing.
